The short answer
The price is the same any day of the year, so the best time is when your timeline needs it. If you have flexibility, avoid the region's crunch points: the end of each month, PCS season in late spring and summer, and university move-outs in May and December. Book a few days ahead in those windows. Otherwise, book by 4 p.m. for same-day pickup, seven days a week, 8 a.m. to midnight. A sofa is $126 and a queen mattress $103, whenever you book.
Winter: January to March
The first months of the year are the calmest for moves in Hampton Roads. Fewer military families are relocating, students have just returned, and the weather keeps people indoors.
That makes winter a good time for projects that need planning. Attic cleanouts in Ghent or Larchmont are comfortable in cool weather. Garage cleanouts in Kempsville or Great Bridge are easier without summer heat. Estate cleanouts can be scheduled without the pressure of a summer move.
Winter is also when the holidays leave their mark. Artificial trees at $37, boxes and packaging, and the furniture replaced by holiday deliveries all need to go.
Nor'easters can still bring wind and tidal flooding in winter. If a storm has pushed water into a garage or ground floor, don't wait for spring. Wet carpet and drywall need to come out quickly.
Spring: April and May
Spring cleaning season starts as the weather warms. Garages and sheds get cleared, yards get tidied, and people finally deal with what's been piling up since fall.
May is when two big calendars hit at once. Old Dominion, Norfolk State and Hampton University students move out, filling Larchmont, Lamberts Point, Brambleton and Hampton curbs with mattresses, desks and futons. And PCS season starts to build, as military moves concentrate in late spring and summer.
If you're a student or a landlord near campus, book your pickup a week or more ahead for the last days of the semester. Weekend slots go first.
Spring is also the best time to clear out old window AC units and dehumidifiers. Test them before summer, keep the one that works, and let the rest go.
Summer: June to August
Summer is PCS season in a Navy metro. Families around NAS Oceana, Naval Station Norfolk, Little Creek, Dam Neck and the shipyard are hitting report dates and move-out inspections. Off-base rentals in Great Neck, Kempsville, Lynnhaven and East Beach turn over fast.
If you're on orders, book the junk pickup for the week your household goods ship. Don't wait for the final night. Schedules tighten as the summer goes on.
Summer is also tourist season at the Oceanfront and Sandbridge, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Rentals are booked solid, so furniture swaps usually wait for the fall.
Heat is the other summer factor. Morning slots are more comfortable if you're helping sort or carry anything yourself. Our crews work from 8 a.m., and you choose a two-hour window.
Hurricane season: June 1 to November 30
Hurricane season overlaps summer and fall. Hurricane Isabel in September 2003 is the storm locals still use as the reference point.
Before a storm, clear the yard and porch of anything that could blow around: old patio furniture, broken grills, loose boards, a trampoline you've been meaning to get rid of. A trampoline is $116 and a patio set of a table and four chairs is $89 + $30 + $30 + $30 + $30 = $209.
Don't put bulky items at the curb when a storm is forecast. Virginia Beach's set-out window is overnight for a reason, and a sofa at the curb during high winds is a hazard.
After a storm, there's often a surge in cleanouts, especially in flood-prone neighborhoods like Windsor Woods, Princess Anne Plaza and The Lakes. Book as soon as you can, and photograph damage for insurance before anything goes.
Fall: September to December
Fall is the off-season at the beach, and that's when Oceanfront and Sandbridge rentals get refreshed. Owners replace worn sofas, mattresses and patio sets between September and May.
Fall is also a good time for big home projects. The heat breaks, the summer moves are done, and contractors are finishing renovations before the holidays. Remodel debris, which neither Virginia Beach nor Chesapeake bulk programs take, is a common fall job.
Mid-December brings the second university move-out of the year. Students finishing in December and those moving off campus for spring need pickups.
Holiday deliveries also start. New furniture and appliances arrive, and the old ones need somewhere to go. Book the pickup for the same day as the delivery, so the old sofa leaves as the new one arrives.
Day of the week and time of day
End of month is the busiest time for renters and landlords, because leases end on the last day. If you can book a few days earlier, do.
Weekends fill first, because that's when people are home. Weekdays often have more open windows.
Evenings work too. We're open until midnight, which helps if the movers run late or you work all day.
Same-day is available when you book by 4 p.m.
None of these change the price. No weekend surcharge, no same-day surcharge, no evening premium. The only thing timing affects is availability. Get your quote from a photo on the instant quote page, then pick the window that suits you.
