The short answer
After water gets in, photograph everything for insurance, then get wet carpet, pad, drywall and soaked furniture out fast, before mold sets in. Don't plan on the city: Virginia Beach's bulky pickup excludes carpet and building materials, and Chesapeake's bulk trash excludes construction debris. A flat pickup handles it: carpet removal $71 per room, rolled carpet $68, drywall $37 per sheet or small bundle, a soaked sofa $126, and mixed loads by truck fill from $241 for a quarter truck.
Flooding is part of living here
Hampton Roads sits on a low coastal plain between the Atlantic, the Chesapeake Bay and a web of rivers and inlets. Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and nor'easters bring wind and tidal flooding outside it. Hurricane Isabel in September 2003 is still the storm locals measure others against.
Virginia Beach takes it seriously enough to run a Flood Protection Program with named neighborhood projects, including Windsor Woods, Princess Anne Plaza, The Lakes and Eastern Shore Drive, alongside its "Sea Level Wise" plan. Lynnhaven's 1970s neighborhoods sit right in that belt.
On the Norfolk side, Ocean View and Willoughby Spit face the bay directly, and bayfront cottages there see storm debris after big blows. Shore Drive and Chesapeake Beach cottages in Bayside sit on the same bay shoreline.
When water comes in, it reaches the garage and the ground floor first. Carpet, the bottom of the drywall, and anything sitting on the floor are what get ruined. In a 1970s ranch, that can be most of the house.
First 48 hours: what to do before anything leaves
- Stay safe. Don't enter standing water if the power may be on. Have the electricity checked if water reached outlets.
- Call your insurer. Ask what documentation they need before you remove damaged items.
- Photograph and video everything. Every room, the waterline on the walls, every damaged item, model numbers on appliances.
- Keep samples if asked. Some adjusters want a cut piece of carpet or pad.
- Start drying. Open windows, run fans and dehumidifiers if power is safe.
- Get wet porous materials out. Carpet, pad, upholstered furniture and mattresses that soaked up floodwater are rarely salvageable.
Speed matters in this climate. Hampton Roads humidity means mold can start within a day or two. The longer wet carpet sits rolled up in a garage, the worse the house smells and the harder the cleanup.
If you rent, tell your landlord or property manager right away and photograph your own belongings separately. The building and the carpet are usually the owner's problem; your soaked sofa and mattress are yours.
Why the city program doesn't help much
Virginia Beach's bulky-item pickup is a good service for furniture, but its not-eligible list includes carpet, building and renovation materials, cardboard boxes and bags. That rules out most of what a flooded room produces. It also requires a request at least three days ahead.
Chesapeake's bulk trash excludes construction debris, including building materials, and limits you to one 4 by 4 by 10 foot pile per week, twelve times a year.
Virginia Beach residents can take appliances, metal and e-waste free to the Resource Recovery Center, which helps for a flooded washer or water heater if you have a truck.
After a large storm, check your city's website for any special debris instructions and follow them. For carpet, drywall and anything you need out of the house now, a pickup is the practical route.

Worked examples
Lynnhaven ranch, three rooms of wet carpet: carpet and pad removed from each room. $71 + $71 + $71 = $213.
Same house, plus a soaked sofa and queen mattress: $213 + $126 + $103 = $442.
Flooded garage in Windsor Woods: washer, dryer, water heater and 20 bags of ruined boxes and contents. $133 + $128 + $131 + $259 = $651.
Ocean View bay cottage after a nor'easter: carpet, cut drywall, furniture and bags all mixed together, loaded as a half truck at $431.
Wet materials are heavy, which is exactly why the crew does the lifting. The quote from your photos shows the total before you book, and it only changes with your approval.
After the debris is out
Once the wet materials are gone, the drying and restoration can start properly. Restoration companies, contractors and insurers handle that part; our job ends when the debris is out.
Keep your pickup invoice with your insurance paperwork. It shows what was removed and when.
Think about prevention for next season. Store valuables off the garage floor on shelves, in plastic bins rather than cardboard. Keep important documents upstairs or in a waterproof box.
Before hurricane season, clear old furniture and loose junk from yards and porches so it can't become storm debris. A soaked old sofa on a porch is one more thing to clean up after.
When you're ready, start with photos on the instant quote page. Book by 4 p.m. for same-day pickup, seven days a week.
Frequently asked questions
Will Virginia Beach pick up flood-damaged carpet?
No. Carpet and building materials are on the bulky pickup's not-eligible list. A flat pickup is $71 per room for carpet removal or $68 for rolled carpet.
Should I photograph damage before removal?
Yes. Photograph and video every room and item, and ask your insurer what documentation it needs before anything leaves the house.
How fast can you remove flood debris?
Same-day when you book by 4 p.m. We work seven days a week, 8 a.m. to midnight.
Do you take wet drywall?
Yes. Drywall is $37 per sheet or small bundle. Larger amounts mixed with other debris are priced by truck fill, from $241 for a quarter truck.
Does a soaked sofa cost more than a dry one?
No. Item prices are flat, so a sofa is $126 wet or dry. You see the total before booking.
Can I put flood-damaged furniture at the curb in Chesapeake?
Eligible furniture can go in Chesapeake's bulk trash within its limit of one 4 by 4 by 10 foot pile per week, requested by the weekday before collection. Construction debris such as drywall and building materials is excluded. After a flood, that weekly limit is often too small for the job.
