The short answer

Garage cleanouts are priced by truck fill, because garages are mixed loads of everything. A quarter truck is $241, a 3/8 truck $338, a half truck $431, a 3/4 truck $587 and a full truck $732. If you only have a few big items, item prices may be cheaper: a riding mower is $152 and a chest freezer $146, so the two together are $152 + $146 = $298.

The garage is the storage in this region

In Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, the garage does a lot of work. Most homes are 1970s to 1990s suburbs, from Lynnhaven's 1970s split-levels to Kempsville's 1980s subdivisions to Great Bridge's 1990s houses on big lots. Red Mill and north Suffolk add newer builds from the 1990s and 2000s. In nearly all of them, the garage, the attic and the shed are where things end up.

Great Bridge is the extreme case. The ZIP is about 90 percent owner-occupied, the lots are large, and three-car garages are common. Families stay a long time, and garages fill up.

Military families add another pattern. Each PCS move brings boxes that never get unpacked and gear for a climate you'll never see again. Those boxes stack up along a garage wall until the next set of orders.

And water matters. In flood-prone neighborhoods, garages are where storm water reaches first. Damp cardboard, rusted tools and moldy furniture are common finds.

Truck tiers for garages

Truck fillFlat priceTypical garage
1/4 truck (~4 cubic yards)$241One corner or one wall of shelving
3/8 truck (~6 cubic yards)$338A full one-car bay, moderately packed
1/2 truck (~8 cubic yards)$431A two-car garage with a path through it
3/4 truck (~12 cubic yards)$587A packed two-car or lightly filled three-car
Full truck (~16 cubic yards)$732A packed three-car garage

These are typical, not fixed. Garages with heavy material, like stacked lumber, tile or concrete, can be priced differently because of weight. The quote from your photos shows the actual tier.

Common garage items, priced alone

ItemFlat price
Lawn Mower$65
Riding Mower / Lawn Tractor$152
Freezer (Chest)$146
Rolling Tool Chest / Workbench$100
Metal Shelving$71
Kayak / Canoe / Paddleboard$71
Bicycle$37
Propane Tank (20 lb)$33
Paint (1-Gallon Can)$30
Tires (set of 4)$87

A Lynnhaven garage with a workbench, two metal shelving units and a dead mower: $100 + $71 + $71 + $65 = $307. A Western Branch garage with a kayak, two bikes and a propane tank: $71 + $37 + $37 + $33 = $178.

What the city programs cover

Virginia Beach's bulky pickup takes large items by request three days ahead, out after 5 p.m. the night before. It won't take paint, propane, tires, hazardous waste, building materials, cardboard boxes or bags. That rules out most of what's in a typical garage.

Chesapeake's bulk trash allows one pile of up to 4 by 4 by 10 feet per week, twelve times a year. It excludes construction debris, tires and hazardous waste. For a big Great Bridge garage, that pile limit means weeks of piles.

Virginia Beach residents can take metals, appliances, e-waste and up to four tires per visit to the Resource Recovery Center free with proof of residency. Old tools, bikes and mowers often qualify as metal. Moyock residents in Currituck County have no curbside bulk; they take items to the convenience center with a permit.

Use the city route for what it takes, and book the rest.

A garage cleanout plan

  1. Pull everything out onto the driveway on a dry day. Out of hurricane season is easiest.
  2. Sort into keep, sell, donate and go. Be strict with boxes that haven't been opened since the last move.
  3. Handle the hazardous items. Paint goes with us. Ask before booking for pool chemicals, solvents or pesticides; those are handled case by case.
  4. Photograph the go pile from two angles for the quote.
  5. Book the pickup. Put the go pile back inside if rain is coming. Crews carry from the garage, not just the driveway.

Allow a full day for a two-car garage, two for a packed three-car. The pickup itself is usually the fast part.

Keep it from filling up again

Put shelving on the walls and keep the floor clear. Label bins by season, especially in a region where hurricane supplies, beach gear and holiday decorations all compete for space.

Keep anything you care about off the floor. Water reaches garage floors first in a storm. Plastic bins on shelves survive a minor flood. Cardboard boxes on the slab don't.

If you're on orders, do a garage sweep every move. It's easier to let go of things in small batches than to face the whole garage at the end of a twenty-year career.

When it's time, get the price from photos on the instant quote page. Book by 4 p.m. for same-day, seven days a week.
