The short answer
A packed storage unit is priced by its size: 5x5 $226, 5x10 $397, 5x15 $539, 10x10 $587, 10x15 $880, 10x20 $1174, 10x25 $1463 and 10x30 $1757. If the unit is only partly full, price the contents by item or by truck fill instead, and compare. Carry-out to the truck, loading and disposal are all included.
Why so many units fill up in the 757
A Navy metro runs on storage units. Families going on deployment store furniture. Families arriving on orders store what doesn't fit in base housing or a smaller rental. Families leaving store what they can't ship, planning to come back for it.
Often they don't come back for it. Orders change, a weight allowance runs out, and a unit rented for six months becomes a unit rented for four years. Monthly rent keeps running on furniture worth less than a year of fees.
Downsizing adds to it. Homeowners in Great Neck, Bayside and Great Bridge move to smaller places and store what they can't bear to part with yet. Estate executors rent a unit to empty a house quickly, then have to empty the unit too.
Students add a smaller wave. Some Old Dominion and Norfolk State students store a room's worth of furniture over the summer, then decide in August that a futon and a desk aren't worth hauling back to a new apartment. Oceanfront and Sandbridge rental owners do the same with spare patio sets and beds swapped out in the off-season.
The math is simple. If you've been paying rent on a unit for more than a year without opening it, add up what you've spent. Then compare it with a one-time cleanout.
Flat prices by unit size
| Unit size | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Storage Unit (5×5) | $226 |
| Storage Unit (5×10) | $397 |
| Storage Unit (5×15) | $539 |
| Storage Unit (10×10) | $587 |
| Storage Unit (10×15) | $880 |
| Storage Unit (10×20) | $1174 |
| Storage Unit (10×25) | $1463 |
| Storage Unit (10×30) | $1757 |
These prices are for a full unit. Most units aren't packed floor to ceiling, so check whether item pricing or a truck tier comes out lower for yours.
Partly full units
Many units hold a few big items and some boxes. In that case, per-item or truck-fill pricing is often cheaper than the full-unit rate.
A 10x10 with a sofa, a queen set, a dresser and 10 boxes: $126 + $143 + $126 + $31 + $31 + $31 + $31 + $31 + $31 + $31 + $31 + $31 + $31 = $705. That's above the 10x10 rate of $587, so the unit price is the better deal.
A 5x10 with only a sectional and a dining table: a 3-piece sectional and a 6-8 seat table are $185 + $163 = $348, which is less than the 5x10 rate of $397.
A 10x15 that's half full: often fits a half truck at $431, well below the 10x15 rate of $880.
Send photos of the open unit, from the door and from inside if you can. You see the price before you book.
Access: gates, hours and paperwork
Storage facilities have rules. Most have gate codes, set access hours and sometimes an office that wants to know who's coming.
- Gate code: share it, or meet the crew at the gate.
- Access hours: book a two-hour window inside them. We're open 8 a.m. to midnight, but your facility may close earlier.
- Lock: leave it unlocked for the window, or be there to open it.
- Facility paperwork: if the office asks for a certificate of insurance, we email it within one hour.
- Upper-floor units: indoor facilities with elevators or stairs are fine. There's no stairs fee.
If you're out of the area on orders, you can arrange access remotely and approve the price from photos a friend or the facility sends.
Before you clear it
Go through the unit once, if you can. Look for the things people forget: tax records, photo albums, military paperwork, medals, family items. Boxes labeled "kitchen" sometimes hold something else entirely.
Check for anything the facility didn't allow. Storage contracts often ban flammables, but units still turn up with gas cans, propane tanks and paint. Paint and a 20 lb propane tank are fine with us. Ask before booking for other hazardous items.
Watch for moisture. Units in this climate, especially ones without climate control, can hold mildewed furniture and damp boxes. That doesn't change our price, but it does change what's worth keeping.
When the unit is empty, tell the facility and end the rental. That's the payoff.
When it's time
The right time to clear a storage unit is before the next rent payment. A 10x10 cleanout at $587 is a one-time cost. Rent keeps going every month.
Book by 4 p.m. for same-day if the facility hours allow it, any day of the week. Choose a two-hour window, and the crew loads everything and takes it away.
If some things are worth keeping, take them first. If some things are worth donating, set them aside. We try to donate usable items when local charities accept them, and we recycle whatever we can.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to clean out a 10x10 storage unit?
A full 10x10 is $587. A partly full unit may cost less priced by item or by truck fill. Compare both before you book.
Do I need to be there?
Not if the crew can get through the gate and the unit is unlocked. You can approve the price from photos.
Can you clear a unit on an upper floor?
Yes. Indoor units reached by elevator or stairs are the same price, with no stairs fee.
What about a 10x20 unit?
A full 10x20 is $1174. For larger units, a 10x25 is $1463 and a 10x30 is $1757.
Will you take hazardous items left in the unit?
Paint and a 20 lb propane tank are accepted. Other hazardous materials are handled case by case, so ask before you book.
I'm deployed or already at my next duty station. Can someone else handle it?
Yes. Give a friend, family member or the facility office access, and have them send photos of the open unit. You approve the price from those photos and pick the arrival window. The crew clears the unit and you can end the rental remotely.
