The short answer

1-800-GOT-JUNK prices its standard service by how much truck space your items take, and runs two local franchises, one for the Southside and one for the Peninsula. JunkRabbit publishes a flat price per item and a set of truck-fill tiers, shows your total before you book from a photo or an online item list, and applies the same prices across every area it serves. A sofa is $126, a queen mattress $103 and a half truck $431, with carry-out from any floor and disposal included.

Pricing model: truck space vs flat list

Truck-space pricing estimates how much of the truck your load will fill, and prices accordingly. It's a common model in the industry, and it works well for big mixed loads.

Flat item pricing works differently. Each item has a listed price. A standard sofa is $126 wherever it is in the house. A queen mattress is $103. A fridge is $164. For mixed piles, we use published truck tiers: a quarter truck is $241, a half truck $431, a full truck $732.

The practical difference is predictability. With a published list, you can work out your own total before you call anyone. A sofa, a dresser and a queen set come to $126 + $126 + $143 = $395, and that's what you'll see in the quote.

For a single item, a flat list also makes the $100 order minimum clear. A lone TV at $62 is billed at $100.

Getting the price

With JunkRabbit, you upload a photo or pick items online, and you see the total before you book. You don't need to schedule an estimate or wait for a crew to look at the load. The price only changes if you approve a change, such as adding items on the day.

This matters most when your schedule is fixed. A family on PCS orders with a move-out inspection, a student with a lease ending in Larchmont, or a landlord with a turnover in Park Place usually needs to know the cost now, not when the truck arrives.

Whatever service you use, ask how quotes are given and whether the price can change once the crew is there. Then compare totals for the same items.

Territory: one list across the 757

Hampton Roads is split by water. The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and the Monitor-Merrimac separate the Southside from the Peninsula, and local services often treat them as two markets. 1-800-GOT-JUNK, for example, has separate franchises on each side.

JunkRabbit uses one price list across the areas it serves: Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth and Suffolk on the Southside; Hampton, Poquoson and southern Newport News on the Peninsula; and Moyock and Knotts Island in North Carolina. A sofa is $126 in Ghent, in Great Bridge and in Phoebus.

If you're a property manager with rentals on both sides of the tunnel, an account covering several properties keeps everything under one price list.

Carry-out and buildings

Every JunkRabbit price includes carrying items out from anywhere in the home, any floor. There's no stairs fee, no walk-up fee and no long-carry charge. That covers the three-story Ghent house, the Oceanfront condo tower and the back bedroom of a Kempsville ranch alike.

For buildings with paperwork, we email a certificate of insurance within one hour. Crews are vetted, insured local haulers.

1-800-GOT-JUNK also offers full-service removal, plus its curbside Flex option for items you bring out yourself. If you're comparing, ask about stairs, elevators and COIs for your building.

Disposal is included in our prices. We recycle whatever we can and try to donate usable items when local charities accept them.

How to choose

Use the same list of items and the same photos for every quote. Then compare the totals and what's included.

  • Is the price shown before booking?
  • Is carry-out from any floor included?
  • Is disposal included?
  • Are there surcharges for stairs, same-day or weekends?
  • Can they send your building a COI?
  • Do they serve your side of the tunnel?

For our side of the comparison, get a total from a photo on the instant quote page. Book by 4 p.m. for same-day, seven days a week, 8 a.m. to midnight, with a two-hour arrival window.
