The short answer
A rental truck makes sense if you have strong helpers, a free weekday, and a load that a free resident drop-off will accept. It makes less sense for furniture and mixed junk, which usually has to go to an SPSA facility that charges by weight and keeps limited Saturday hours. A flat pickup removes the truck, the loading and the drive: a sofa is $126, a quarter truck $241 and a half truck $431, with carry-out and disposal included.
What a DIY haul actually involves
- Reserve a truck or trailer and pick it up, often in the morning.
- Load it. That means carrying everything out of the house, down any stairs, and up a ramp. You'll need at least two people for a sofa, three for a sleeper or a fridge.
- Tie it down. Loose items blow out on I-264 and the bridges.
- Drive to a facility that accepts your load, during its hours.
- Unload it at the facility, often by hand.
- Return the truck, refueled, by the deadline.
For a small load, that's half a day. For a garage or a whole room, it's often a full day, and sometimes two trips.
The rental fee is only part of the cost. The rest is time, fuel, mileage, gate charges and the risk of getting hurt.
Where you can take it in Hampton Roads
Virginia Beach Resource Recovery Center, 1989 Jake Sears Road, takes e-waste, metals and appliances, up to four tires, concrete, brush and porcelain free from residents with proof of residency. It's open Tuesday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It doesn't list furniture or mattresses.
SPSA transfer stations, including Landstown in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk at 3136 Woodland Avenue, and Suffolk, take household waste. Check what each accepts and what it charges before you go.
SPSA Regional Landfill, 1 Bob Foeller Drive in Suffolk, is open weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon. It takes cards only.
Currituck County residents use convenience centers with a County Access Permit.
Most people rent a truck on Saturday. Most facilities close early on Saturday. Plan around that.
The tunnel and the drive
Distances in Hampton Roads are bigger than they look on a map. A trip from the Oceanfront to the Regional Landfill in Suffolk is a long drive. From Phoebus or Fox Hill on the Peninsula, it means crossing the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel or the Monitor-Merrimac, and anyone who lives here knows what tunnel traffic can do to a schedule.
Peninsula residents aren't in the SPSA system at all. Newport News runs its own Recovery Operations Center, where residents can bring six extra cubic yards free. Hampton and Poquoson have their own arrangements.
Add the drive back to return the truck, and a DIY haul can easily eat a full Saturday, with a rental clock running the whole time.
Where DIY wins
You already own a truck. No rental fee, no deadline.
Your load is free to drop. If you're a Virginia Beach resident with metal, appliances, e-waste, concrete or brush, the Resource Recovery Center is free and well run.
Everything is in the garage. No stairs, no hallways, a short carry.
You have a weekday free and strong helpers.
You're moving anyway. If you've rented a truck for a local move, a stop at a transfer station on the way can make sense for a few items.
In those cases, DIY can be the cheaper route, and we'd say so.
Where a pickup wins
| Item or load | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Sofa / Couch | $126 |
| Mattress + Box Spring Set | $143 |
| Refrigerator (Standard) | $164 |
| 1/4 truck (~4 cubic yards) | $241 |
| 1/2 truck (~8 cubic yards) | $431 |
| Full truck (~16 cubic yards) | $732 |
A pickup wins when the items are inside or upstairs, when the load is mixed, or when your time is worth more than a day of hauling. A sofa, a queen set and a fridge from a two-story Kempsville house come to $126 + $143 + $164 = $433, carried out with nothing for you to lift.
There's no stairs fee, no same-day surcharge, and disposal is included. Book by 4 p.m. for same-day.
An honest comparison checklist
- Truck or trailer rental, plus mileage and fuel.
- Gate charges at the facility, if your load isn't free.
- Number of trips the load will take.
- Facility hours versus your free day.
- Helpers, and what you'll pay or owe them.
- Risk: back strain, a dropped fridge, a scratched floor.
- Your own hours, start to finish.
Add it up, then compare it against the flat price from a photo on the instant quote page. For some jobs DIY wins. For most furniture and mixed loads, the pickup does.
