The short answer
Giving furniture away costs nothing but a listing. Virginia Beach's bulky-item pickup costs nothing in cash if you request it at least three days ahead and can carry the piece to the curb. When neither works, a flat-price pickup is the cheapest way to avoid renting a truck. The order minimum is $100, a sofa is $126, and a dresser is $126.
Rank 1: give it away
Zero dollars, one listing. In a region with constant Navy arrivals and three universities, usable furniture moves fast. A free bookcase or dining set posted on a Saturday morning in Kempsville or Western Branch is usually gone by Sunday.
What it costs you is coordination. You set a pickup time, wait for people who may not show, and help carry it out. Put the item in the garage or on the driveway if you can, so strangers don't need to come inside.
It only works for things people want. Broken frames, stained upholstery and pet-damaged pieces won't move. Don't let a give-away listing hold up your timeline. If nobody claims it in three or four days, move on.
Never put a free sign on furniture at the curb and leave it. In Virginia Beach, bulky items belong at the curb only from 5 p.m. the night before a scheduled pickup until 7 a.m.
Rank 2: the city's bulky pickup
Virginia Beach's bulky pickup is by request online, by phone or by email at least three days before your trash day. The city's page doesn't list a fee. It handles typical furniture: sofas, chairs, tables, dressers and beds. It won't take cabinets, doors, sinks, toilets, glass, carpet, cardboard boxes or bagged items, so a remodel or a pile of bagged clutter doesn't qualify.
In Chesapeake, it's one pile of up to 4 by 4 by 10 feet per week, twelve times a year. Norfolk takes requests until 3 p.m. the day before. Newport News allows up to six cubic yards per collection day.
The real cost is labor and time. You carry everything to the curb. You plan around your trash day. If you live in an Oceanfront condo or a Downtown Norfolk apartment, you may have no curb that works. For a single-family house with a driveway and two strong people, though, this is the cheapest route by far.
Rank 3: haul it yourself
If you own a pickup or can borrow one, self-hauling can be cheap. Virginia Beach's Resource Recovery Center on Jake Sears Road is free for residents but focuses on e-waste, metals, appliances, tires, concrete, brush and porcelain. Furniture typically goes to SPSA facilities, such as the Landstown transfer station or the Regional Landfill in Suffolk. Check their resident rules and gate charges before you go.
Count the hidden costs. A truck rental adds mileage. A trip from Great Neck to Suffolk is a real drive, and the Regional Landfill closes at noon on Saturday. Loading takes time, and you'll need help with anything heavy.
Self-hauling makes most sense when you have the truck already and several pieces at once. For one sofa, the savings are often smaller than they look.
Rank 4: a flat-price pickup
| Item | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Sofa / Couch | $126 |
| Loveseat | $119 |
| Recliner | $98 |
| Dresser (Standard) | $126 |
| Coffee Table | $67 |
| End Table / Side Table | $52 |
| Bookshelf | $72 |
| Dining Table (2-4 Seat) | $103 |
| Bed Frame (Standard / Metal / Platform) | $68 |
The price covers carrying from any floor, loading, transport and disposal. There is no stairs fee and no same-day surcharge. You don't need a truck, a helper or a free Saturday.
How to keep a paid pickup cheap
Group small items. The minimum is $100. A coffee table alone is $67, which is billed at $100. A coffee table and two end tables come to $67 + $52 + $52 = $171, which uses the visit fully.
Pick the right item. Price by what you actually have. A standard metal bed frame is $68. A solid or upholstered one is more. Describe it honestly or upload a photo.
Compare item prices with truck tiers. For one room, item prices usually win. For a full garage, a truck tier often does. A quarter truck, about 4 cubic yards, is $241. A half truck is $431.
Use the city program for what it takes. If you have a simple sofa that you can get to the curb and you're not on a deadline, use bulky pickup. Book a paid pickup for the pieces that are upstairs, oversized, or due out this week.
We don't run volume discounts or coupons. The posted price is the price, so you can compare it against the other routes directly.
Worked examples
Living room in a Lynnhaven split-level: sofa, loveseat and coffee table. $126 + $119 + $67 = $312.
Spare room in a Churchland ranch: metal bed frame, dresser and a bookshelf. $68 + $126 + $72 = $266.
Ghent walk-up, third floor: a recliner and a small dining table. $98 + $103 = $201. The stairs cost nothing extra.
Single coffee table: $67, billed at the $100 minimum. If you have anything else small to go, add it.
If a living-room set is in decent shape, try giving it away first. If it's going in the trash anyway, the city route or a pickup are your choices, and the right one depends on whether you can carry it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest way to get rid of a couch in Virginia Beach?
Giving it away or using the city's bulky pickup, which doesn't list a fee. Request it at least three days before your trash day. If you can't carry it out, a flat pickup is $126 for a standard sofa.
Is there a minimum charge for furniture pickup?
Yes, the order minimum is $100. Single items under that, like a $67 coffee table, are billed at $100. Grouping small items makes the most of the visit.
Can I take furniture to the Virginia Beach landfill for free?
The city's Resource Recovery Center is free for residents but focuses on e-waste, metals, appliances, tires, concrete, brush and porcelain. Furniture usually goes to SPSA facilities. Check their resident rules and fees before you load up.
Do you offer discounts for several items?
No. Each item has a flat published price, and there are no volume discounts. For large loads, a truck-fill tier such as $241 for a quarter truck may be the better fit.
Does the price go up if the furniture is upstairs?
No. Carry-out from any floor is included, with no stairs fee. A sofa from a third floor costs the same $126 as one from a garage.
