The short answer
If you can get the couch to the curb yourself, Virginia Beach's bulky-item pickup will take it after you request it at least three days before your trash day. If it's stuck in a third-floor Ghent apartment, an Oceanfront condo, or you need it gone before a move-out inspection, a flat-price pickup is sofa $126, loveseat $119, sleeper sofa $149 or 3-piece sectional $185, carried out from any floor.
Step one: decide if it can be sold or given away
Hampton Roads has a steady flow of people who need furniture fast. Families arrive on PCS orders at Naval Station Norfolk, NAS Oceana and Little Creek. Students move into Larchmont and Brambleton every August. A clean couch in good shape can find a taker in a day or two on local marketplace groups.
Be honest about what you have. Measure it, note any pets or smoke, and photograph the cushions and the frame. A couch with torn upholstery or a broken frame won't sell, and listing it wastes a week.
The humidity here also counts against older upholstered pieces. A sofa from a beach cottage on Shore Drive or a sunroom in Bayside may smell musty even if it looks fine. Buyers notice.
Charities may take good furniture, but most turn down stained or damaged pieces and many have limited pickup. If you go that route, call first and ask what they accept. We try to donate usable items when local charities accept them, but nobody can promise a specific couch will be taken.
Step two: the free city pickup
In Virginia Beach, bulky pickup works by request online, by phone or by email, at least three days before your regular trash day. The couch goes out between 5 p.m. the night before and 7 a.m. on collection day, with about three feet of clearance and not under power lines. The city's page doesn't list a fee.
In Norfolk, you can request bulk pickup by 3 p.m. the day before through MyNorfolk or by phone. In Chesapeake, the request is due the weekday before your collection day, and your pile can be up to 4 by 4 by 10 feet, which fits a sofa and a chair, once a week and twelve times a year. In Newport News, it goes out on your bulk day, up to six cubic yards.
The catch is always the same: you move it. The city truck doesn't come into the house. That is fine in a Kempsville ranch with a two-car garage. It is a real problem when the couch is upstairs.
Step three: getting it out of the house
Most couch removal pain is the trip from the living room to the street. Older Norfolk and Portsmouth homes, built around the 1960s or earlier, have narrow stairs, tight landings and porches. In Ghent, where the median home predates 1939, a sofa that came in before a renovation may not fit back out the same way.
A few rules if you do it yourself. Take the legs off first; most screw out. Remove cushions and carry them separately. Measure the narrowest door and stairwell before you lift. Stand the couch on end to turn corners. Never carry a sleeper sofa without securing the mechanism, because it can spring open mid-stair. Have at least two people, and three for a sleeper.
Condo and apartment buildings add their own steps. At the Oceanfront, Town Center or Downtown Norfolk, you may need an elevator reservation and the building may require a certificate of insurance from whoever does the moving. We email a COI within one hour of a request.
Step four: hauling it yourself
If you have a truck, Virginia Beach residents can't take a couch to the Resource Recovery Center, which focuses on e-waste, metals, appliances, tires, concrete and brush. Furniture goes to SPSA facilities, such as the Landstown transfer station or the Regional Landfill in Suffolk. Check their current hours and resident rules before you go. The Regional Landfill is open weekdays 8 to 4 and Saturday mornings, and takes card payment only.
Strap the couch down. The wind on the bridges and along I-264 is no joke, and a cushion coming loose at speed is a hazard to everyone behind you.
Compare the full cost: truck, fuel, gate charge, and three to four hours including loading. For a single sofa, that often lands close to the flat pickup price, without the carrying.
Step five: flat-price couch pickup
| Item | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Sofa / Couch | $126 |
| Loveseat | $119 |
| Sleeper Sofa | $149 |
| Reclining / Power Sofa | $152 |
| Sectional Sofa (2-Piece) | $141 |
| Sectional Sofa (3-Piece) | $185 |
| Sectional Sofa (4+ Piece) | $228 |
| Sofa (Oversize 90"+ / Disassembly / Cut-Apart) | $185 |
| Armchair / Accent Chair | $77 |
A sofa and matching loveseat: $126 + $119 = $245. A 3-piece sectional and an accent chair: $185 + $77 = $262.
The crew carries it out from any room or floor, with no stairs fee. Pick a two-hour window, any day from 8 a.m. to midnight. Book by 4 p.m. for same-day.
Local timing tips
If you're on PCS orders, book the couch pickup for the week your household goods ship. Movers often won't take worn furniture, and you don't want it sitting in an empty house before clearing quarters or a move-out inspection.
In hurricane season, from June through November, don't leave an upholstered couch at the curb if storms are forecast. A soaked couch weighs far more and may not be collected.
If you're in Chesapeake and have already used most of your twelve bulk pickups for the year, a paid pickup keeps your remaining ones for yard debris and smaller piles.
And if the couch is in an Oceanfront rental, schedule the swap in the off-season. Summer is booked solid, and turnovers happen between September and May.
