The short answer
Sort it into three piles: worth selling, worth giving away, and done. Sell the solid-wood and newer pieces, offer the usable rest to the people who move into Hampton Roads every week, and send the broken or worn pieces out through your city's bulky pickup or a flat-price pickup. A dresser is $126, a sofa $126, and a dining table for 6-8 is $163, carried out from any floor.
Why this question comes up so often in the 757
Hampton Roads is a Navy metro, and that shapes how furniture moves through it. Naval Station Norfolk, NAS Oceana, JEB Little Creek–Fort Story, Dam Neck and Norfolk Naval Shipyard bring constant permanent-change-of-station moves. Every set of orders comes with a household goods weight allowance. Heavy, worn or bulky furniture is often the first thing to go.
The region also has two very different housing stocks. Norfolk and Portsmouth are the old cities, with a median home built in the mid-1960s and pre-war houses in Ghent, Park Place and Port Norfolk. Virginia Beach and Chesapeake are mostly 1970s to 1990s suburbs, with garages that fill up over decades in Kempsville, Lynnhaven and Great Bridge.
So you get two kinds of furniture problems. One is a family with three weeks to a report date. The other is a downsizing homeowner with thirty years in a split-level and a garage full of pieces from three previous houses. The answer differs, but the steps are the same.
Sell what has real value
Solid-wood pieces sell best: dressers, dining sets, hutches and bookcases. Newer flat-pack furniture usually doesn't, because it rarely survives a second assembly. Big upholstered pieces sell only when they are clean and recent.
Price for a quick sale. In a market with steady incoming families, a fair price moves a dining set within days. An ambitious price sits for weeks.
Take photos in daylight with measurements in the listing. Note whether it comes apart. Buyers in Downtown Norfolk apartments or Town Center condos need to know if it fits the elevator.
Set a deadline. If it hasn't sold a week before you need the room empty, stop waiting. The cost of missing a move-out inspection or a closing date is higher than the sale price of most used furniture.
Give away what still works
Usable furniture that won't sell can still help someone. Families arriving on orders, students moving off campus near Old Dominion, Norfolk State or Hampton University, and first-time renters all look for free pieces. Local free groups move items fast, especially on weekends.
Charities are another option, but ask first. Many decline upholstered pieces with stains, tears or pet hair, and many won't take items from upstairs. When we pick up, we try to donate usable items when local charities accept them, and we recycle whatever we can. We won't promise a donation, because the charity makes that call.
Don't leave free furniture at the curb hoping someone takes it. In Virginia Beach, bulky items belong at the curb only in the city's set-out window after a pickup request. A couch with a free sign on it for a week is a code problem, not a gift.
Use the city program for the rest
Virginia Beach's bulky pickup is by request at least three days before your trash day. Items go out after 5 p.m. the night before and by 7 a.m., three feet from obstructions and not under power lines. Cabinets, doors, glass, sinks and toilets are not eligible, so built-ins torn out of a kitchen don't count as furniture here.
Chesapeake gives you one pile of up to 4 by 4 by 10 feet per week, twelve times a year, with the request due the weekday before. Norfolk takes requests until 3 p.m. the day before. Newport News collects up to six cubic yards on your bulk day.
All of these require you to carry the furniture to the curb. If you can, it's the cheapest route. If the furniture is on the second floor of a Ghent house or in a Hilltop apartment, that's where it gets hard.
Have it picked up at a flat price
| Item | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Dresser (Standard) | $126 |
| Chest of Drawers | $126 |
| Dining Table (6-8 Seat) | $163 |
| Dining Chair | $45 |
| Cabinet / China Hutch | $160 |
| Armoire — Large / Double (Solid Wood) | $197 |
| Bookcase — Solid Wood (tall / 6ft+) | $123 |
| Entertainment Center / TV Stand | $96 |
| Desk (Standard) | $83 |
A dining table with four chairs: $163 + $45 + $45 + $45 + $45 = $343. A bedroom of dresser, chest and two nightstands: $126 + $126 + $57 + $57 = $366.
Every price includes carrying it out from any floor, loading and disposal. There is no stairs fee. You see the total before you book, and it only changes if you approve it.
A simple order of operations
- Walk the house with tape and mark each piece: sell, give, or go.
- List the sell pile right away, with a firm end date.
- Post the give pile a week later.
- Check your city's bulky rules and your pickup day.
- Book a flat-price pickup for whatever is left, timed for the day before you need the room empty.
For a PCS move, line it up with the household goods pickup. For an estate in an older Norfolk home, give yourself an extra week, because attics and closets always hold more than you expect. For a downsizing in Great Neck or Great Bridge, start with the garage. It is usually the biggest single pile.
If the leftovers are more than a few pieces, a truck-fill price may beat item-by-item. A quarter truck, about 4 cubic yards, is $241. A half truck is $431.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I take old furniture in Virginia Beach?
Residents can request bulky pickup from the city at least three days before trash day. The Resource Recovery Center focuses on e-waste, metals, appliances, tires, concrete and brush. Furniture you haul yourself goes to SPSA facilities, so check their rules first.
Will charities pick up furniture in Hampton Roads?
Some do, but most decline stained, damaged or upholstered items in poor shape. Call first and ask. We try to donate usable items when local charities accept them.
What does furniture removal cost in Virginia Beach?
A standard dresser is $126, a sofa $126, a dining table for 6-8 is $163 and a dining chair $45. The order minimum is $100. Prices include carry-out from any floor.
Should I move old furniture on a PCS move or get rid of it?
Weigh it against your household goods allowance and the cost of replacing it at the new station. Worn, heavy or flat-pack pieces are usually better left behind. Book the pickup for the week your goods ship.
Is it cheaper to pay by the item or by the truckload?
For a few pieces, per-item is usually cheaper. For a full room or garage, a truck-fill tier often wins, starting at $241 for a quarter truck. Add up the items and compare them with the nearest tier.
